Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located about 100 km north of Chisinau, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's history and religious heritage. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, this cave monastery is one of the largest and most significant in Eastern Europe. The monastery's history dates back to the 6th century BC, with the first monks believed to have inhabited the caves in the 10th-12th centuries. Over the centuries, the monastery expanded, with new chambers and churches added. In 1776, a period of prosperity began, and the monastery was divided into large sections separated by massive columns. During the Soviet era, the monastery was closed and suffered destruction. However, in 1975, the ruins were taken under state protection, and in 1994, religious services were resumed. Today, visitors can explore three religious chambers and monastic cells linked by precarious steps carved into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, the newest chamber, houses an active church and a small museum. Legends surround Tipova Monastery, with one claiming that Stefan cel Mare, a great Moldovan ruler, married his wife Maria Voichita here. Another legend suggests that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and is buried near a waterfall. Beyond its historical and religious significance, Tipova Monastery offers stunning natural scenery. The surrounding hills are covered in forests, and the Tipova River forms picturesque waterfalls as it flows into the Dniester. Visitors can explore the area's hiking trails and enjoy the tranquility of the Moldovan countryside.
