Discover more about Soroca Fortress

Soroca Fortress, located in the city of Soroca, Moldova, is a remarkable example of medieval defensive architecture. The fortress was initially constructed as a wooden fort in 1499 under the rule of Stephen the Great to defend a vital crossing point on the Dniester River. However, some historians suggest the wooden structure may have appeared even earlier. Between 1543 and 1546, during the reign of Petru Rareș, the fortress was rebuilt in stone, resulting in the structure visitors see today. The fortress boasts a circular design with a diameter of 37.5 meters and five equally spaced bastions. This design incorporates the "golden section," making it unique among European defensive structures. The walls, built in a curved shape to better resist projectiles, are 3.05 meters thick and 21 meters high. Each of the five towers has four levels, with the lower two originally used for artillery. Above the entrance gate, a small military church can be found.Throughout history, Soroca Fortress has been a strategic point in numerous conflicts. It successfully defended against Ottoman forces during the Great Turkish War. In 1711, during the Prut Campaign, Moldovan and Russian troops united here to resist Ottoman rule. Today, the fortress is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Moldova's medieval past.
