Located near Chișinău's City Gates, the Village Museum is an open-air ethnographic complex that transports visitors to a traditional Basarabian village of the 17th to 19th centuries. Established in 1991 and opened in 1995, the museum displays a collection of authentic Moldovan peasant homes, wooden churches, and other structures that exemplify the country's rural architectural styles and cultural heritage.Visitors can explore meticulously preserved and reconstructed buildings, furnished with period-appropriate items that offer insight into the daily lives, customs, and crafts of Moldovan people from different eras. The museum also hosts exhibits displaying various aspects of rural life, including crafts, agricultural tools and folklore. Live demonstrations of traditional crafts and folk performances provide an immersive experience, and special events offer the chance to taste local cuisine.Among the notable monuments is the wooden church brought from the village of Hirișeni, dating back to 1642. It stands as one of the tallest wooden churches in Moldova, reaching 27 meters. Although a windmill from Opaci, added in 1995, was destroyed by fire in 2001 and remains unrestored, the museum continues to offer a serene and enlightening experience.
