Discover more about The Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch, also known as the Holy Gate, is a significant historical monument in the heart of Chișinău. Constructed in 1840 by architect Luka Zauschevic, it was dedicated to the Russian Empire's triumph over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War (1828–1829). The arch is strategically located on the main axis of the city center, aligning with the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of God and the Cathedral Bell Tower. The arch's design draws inspiration from Roman triumphal arches and is made of polished white stone with four openings. It stands 13 meters tall and features Corinthian-style capitals and ceramic ornaments. Originally, the arch housed a massive 6.4-ton bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The bell was intended for the Nativity Cathedral but was too large, leading to the arch's construction to accommodate it.Throughout its history, the Triumphal Arch has undergone several transformations. In 1945, marble plaques honoring Soviet heroes of World War II were added, but these were removed in 1991 after Moldova gained independence. The arch has also been known as the Arch of Triumph and the Arch of Victory. Today, it remains a focal point for national celebrations, military parades, and public events. Visiting the arch offers a glimpse into Moldova's past and provides a starting point for exploring other nearby attractions such as the Nativity Cathedral and the National Museum of History of Moldova.
