The statue is a replica of the ancient sculpture in Rome, representing the mythical she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.Originally, the municipality of Rome donated the statue to Chișinău in 1921, symbolizing the Latin roots shared by Italians and Romanians. The monument was completed in 1923 and placed in front of the Sfatul Țării Palace. However, in 1940, during the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, the statue was destroyed for political reasons.In 1990, a new copy was donated by Romania and unveiled on December 1st in front of the National History Museum of Moldova. The statue has undergone restoration, including a period from 2005 to 2009 when it was removed and stored in the museum's basement. Today, the Capitoline Wolf stands as a symbol of resilience and the intertwined histories of Moldova and Rome, inviting visitors to delve into Moldova's rich cultural heritage.
