Hâncu Monastery: A Moldovan Spiritual Retreat

Hâncu Monastery, located in Bursuc, Moldova, is a serene and historically significant site founded in 1678. The monastery was established by Mihail Hâncu, a high steward, to fulfill his daughter Parascheva's wish to become a nun. Originally a hermitage known as Viadica, the monastery has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history.Initially a female community, it was destroyed in the mid-18th century by the Crimean Tatars. The monastery was restored by monks after the arrival of the Russian army in 1770-1772 and became a male community. Two stone churches replaced the original wooden structure: one dedicated to St. Pious Parascheva (1835) and the other to the Dormition of the Mother of God (1845).Under Soviet rule in 1944, the monastery was nationalized and the religious community disbanded in 1965. In 1978, the site was repurposed as a sanatorium, with the oldest church becoming a social club. Following the Soviet Union's collapse, the monastery was reopened in 1990, briefly housing monks before reverting to a female monastery in 1992. Today, Hâncu Monastery is home to a large community of nuns and includes a retreat house and the bishop's residence. Visitors can explore the beautifully adorned chapels, admire the stunning frescoes, and stroll through the well-maintained grounds filled with flowers. The monastery also hosts religious events throughout the year, offering a glimpse into local culture and traditions.
