The monument was designed in 1923 by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală.The bronze statue depicts Stephen the Great in regal attire, holding a sword, symbolizing his role as a defender of the principality. The monument has seen its share of turmoil. In 1940, fearing Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, only to return in 1942.
