The Stephen the Great Monument stands as a powerful symbol of Moldovan identity and resilience. Erected in 1928, the monument commemorates Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), the Prince of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, who is revered for his military victories and efforts to preserve Moldovan autonomy. The monument was designed in 1923 by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală.The bronze statue depicts Stephen the Great in regal attire, holding a sword, symbolizing his role as a defender of the principality. The monument has seen its share of turmoil. In 1940, fearing Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, only to return in 1942. It was moved again in 1944 and finally restored to its original location in 1989, marking a pivotal moment during Moldova's national revival.Today, the Stephen the Great Monument is more than just a historical landmark; it's a gathering place for celebrations, commemorations, and official ceremonies. Its central location and symbolic significance make it a must-see attraction for visitors to Chișinău.
