Discover more about Suta de Movile

Suta de Movile presents a captivating landscape of rolling hills near the Prut River in Moldova's Rîșcani district. The name translates to 'Hundred Mounds,' though the area actually contains over 3,500 microforms of relief. These mounds, ranging from 1 to 30 meters in height, create a unique and undulating terrain that stretches for approximately 8 kilometers. Geologically, the mounds are remnants of ancient submarine reefs from the Sarmatian Sea, which covered the region millions of years ago. This makes Suta de Movile a one-of-a-kind geological phenomenon in Europe. While legends suggest they are burial mounds of ancient warriors, their true origin lies in sedimentary rock formations shaped by the tides of the ancient sea. The largest mound, known as Movila Țiganului (Gypsy's Mound), stands at approximately 60 meters. Visitors can explore the area, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The site offers a blend of history, archaeology, and natural beauty, attracting those interested in ancient civilizations and serene environments. The area's solitude, interrupted only by a small road, adds to its charm, with local villages like Braniște and Cobani nearby. Suta de Movile is a testament to Moldova's complex history and unique geography.
