The Stephen the Great Monument is a prominent landmark in Chișinău, Moldova, symbolizing the nation's history and identity. Dedicated to Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), who ruled Moldova from 1457 to 1504, the monument celebrates his successful defense of the country against the Ottoman Empire and his contributions to Moldovan culture.The monument, designed by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală, was completed in 1927 and inaugurated in 1928, replacing a monument to Alexander II of Russia. The bronze statue depicts Stephen the Great in royal attire, holding a sword and cross, symbolizing his role as both a defender and a devout leader. The statue itself is 5.20 meters tall and was cast using bronze from cannons captured from the Ottomans during the Romanian War of Independence.Located at the entrance of Stephen the Great Central Park, the monument has witnessed significant events in Moldova's history. It was moved to Romania during periods of Soviet occupation and restored to its original location in 1989.
