Discover more about The Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch in Chișinău is a prominent monument steeped in history and architectural significance. Designed by architect Luka Zaușchevici, its construction was completed in 1840. The arch was built to celebrate the Russian Empire's triumph over the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish War.Historically, the arch has undergone several name changes, including the Arch of Victory during Soviet times. Today, it stands as the sole surviving triumphal arch in Chișinău. The 13-meter tall structure is made of polished white stone and features a square shape with four openings. Corinthian-style columns adorn its base, while the upper level showcases a classical design.Initially, the arch was intended to house a massive bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. However, the bell proved too large, necessitating the construction of a separate belfry. Over the years, the arch has seen various modifications, including the addition of a clock in 1842 and the installation of marble plaques dedicated to Soviet heroes during World War II, which were later removed in 1991.The Triumphal Arch is located on the Great National Assembly Square, aligning with the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of God and the Cathedral Bell Tower. It serves as a backdrop for military parades and national celebrations. Lit in the evenings, the arch provides a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll.
