    Getting There

    Driving

    If driving from Chisinau, take the E58 towards Rezina. Follow the signs towards Tipova. After turning off Hwy R20, about 20km south of Rezina, follow the sealed road through sunflower fields for 12.5km. Look for the clearly marked turnoff to Tipova on the left – the monastery is 2.5km from here on a partially sealed road. Parking is available near the modern Orthodox church complex. Be aware that the road is partially sealed.

    Public Transport

    From Chisinau's North Bus Station, take the 10:30 AM marshrutka (minibus) to Tipova. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours. From the Ţipova stop, follow the signs towards the monastery, which is approximately a 20-minute walk. Check the latest bus schedules, as they may vary. A one-way ticket costs approximately 50 MDL.

    Walking

    From the parking area, walk through a modern Orthodox church complex toward the cliff edge. From there, you'll have spectacular views of the Dniester. Head south along the cliff edge and follow steep trails down to the cave monastery. Be prepared for a moderately challenging hike.

    Tipova Monastery, located approximately 100 km northeast of Chisinau, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's enduring spiritual heritage. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, this cave monastery is one of the largest in Eastern Europe, with a history that dates back centuries.The monastery complex consists of three main religious chambers and numerous monastic cells, all intricately carved into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to have been established in the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, dating back to the 15th century, houses an active church and a small museum. Visitors can explore the various levels of the monastery, connected by precarious steps and galleries, and admire the ancient frescoes that adorn the walls.Throughout its history, Tipova Monastery has served not only as a religious sanctuary but also as a defensive stronghold. Legend has it that Stefan cel Mare, a prominent Moldovan ruler, married one of his wives here in the 15th century. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near one of the waterfalls.During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and suffered significant damage. However, in 1975, the site was designated as a protected historical monument, and monastic life was revived in 1994. Today, Tipova Monastery welcomes visitors daily, offering a unique opportunity to explore its historical monuments and natural landscapes. The surrounding Tipova nature reserve features forests, waterfalls, and the Dniester River, providing a picturesque setting for exploration and reflection.
