Discover more about Fort Antoine Theatre

Nestled on the northeastern point of the Rock of Monaco, the Fort Antoine Theatre offers a unique blend of history and culture. Originally constructed as a fortress in 1714 by Prince Antoine I during the War of the Spanish Succession, it was designed with underground barracks and a cistern. The fort played a strategic role, offering magnificent views of the Mediterranean. In 1943, during World War II, German forces used Fort Antoine as a munitions depot. In 1944, retreating German troops detonated the fort, leaving it in ruins. Prince Rainier III rebuilt the site in 1953, transforming it into an open-air theater. Since 1970, the theater has hosted open-air plays and musical concerts during the summer. The architecture retains its military character, featuring a bartizan, a pyramid of cannonballs, and pittosporum hedges emphasizing the parapet. The theater has a seating capacity of 350 and offers free access to performances, though reservations are required due to limited space. The summer program includes music, theater, and readings, with a focus on providing artistic discoveries for all. The theater is open in July and August and is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
