Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Khangai Mountains.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
From any location in the Khentii Mountains, head towards the nearest major town, which is likely to be Khentii's capital, Undurkhaan. From Undurkhaan, take the A-6 highway heading west towards the Arkhangai region. Continue on the A-6 for approximately 250 kilometers until you reach the town of Tsetserleg in Arkhangai. This journey may take around 4-5 hours depending on road conditions. Once in Tsetserleg, you can take a local road heading south towards the Khangai Mountains. Follow local signs or ask locals for directions to the nearest entry point to the mountains, which are well known and usually frequented by tourists.
Public Transportation (Bus)
Begin your journey from Undurkhaan by taking a bus heading towards Tsetserleg. Buses typically leave from the central bus station, and the fare is approximately 15,000 MNT (Mongolian Tugrik). The bus ride will take around 5-6 hours. Upon arriving in Tsetserleg, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a local shared vehicle (known as a 'microbus') to take you to the Khangai Mountains. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand, which should be around 10,000-20,000 MNT depending on your destination within the mountains.
Taxi
If you prefer a more direct route and are willing to pay extra, consider hiring a taxi from Undurkhaan to the Khangai Mountains directly. This option is much faster than public transport and can take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Expect to pay around 100,000-150,000 MNT for the trip, so make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before departing.
Local guide service
For an optimal experience, consider hiring a local guide service once you reach Tsetserleg. Many guides offer tours into the Khangai Mountains, which can include transportation, meals, and accommodations. Prices vary widely based on the length and type of tour, but expect to pay at least 50,000 MNT per day for a comprehensive package. This option is particularly beneficial for navigating the less marked trails and gaining insights into the local culture.
