Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the main road in Orkhon Valley. Head south on the road towards Dundgovi province. After approximately 25 kilometers, you will see a sign for Ongi Monastery. Turn left onto the dirt road when you see the sign. Continue for another 10 kilometers until you reach the monastery site. Be cautious as the road can be bumpy and may require a 4x4 vehicle for the last stretch.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a minibus or shared taxi from Orkhon Valley to the town of Mandal-Ovoo, which is the closest settlement to Ongi Monastery. This trip may take around 1-1.5 hours and costs approximately 5,000 MNT. Once in Mandal-Ovoo, you can hire a local taxi or arrange a ride with locals to take you to Ongi Monastery. This last leg will cost around 10,000-15,000 MNT, depending on the negotiation.
Bicycle
If you are adventurous and want to explore the area by bicycle, you can rent a bike in Orkhon Valley. Start by heading south on the main road towards Dundgovi province. After about 25 kilometers, look for the sign for Ongi Monastery and take the left onto the dirt road. The ride will be challenging and may take around 2-3 hours, but you will be rewarded with beautiful landscapes along the way.
Hiking
For the more adventurous travelers, consider hiking to Ongi Monastery. From Orkhon Valley, plan for a full-day hike by following the river southwards. It is about a 30-kilometer trek, so make sure to prepare with ample food and water. Once you reach the area, you can find the monastery ruins. This option is recommended only for experienced hikers due to the rugged terrain.
