History of West End

From Valley Settlement to City Edge

West End occupies land on the western side of Billings’ expanding urban area, within the broader Yellowstone Valley landscape that developed through agriculture, transport and commerce. Its modern identity is much newer than that of the city’s original downtown core. As Billings grew beyond its early railway-centred centre, roads and residential development gradually extended west across open and semi-rural land. The area’s broad scale reflects this outward movement: it was planned largely for automobiles, detached housing, commercial buildings and convenient road access rather than for the dense blocks associated with the historic centre.

Post-War Residential Expansion

The decades after the Second World War brought substantial population growth and suburban expansion to Billings. West End became part of the city’s developing residential belt, with new homes, schools, apartment areas and larger arterial roads replacing or surrounding earlier open land. Grand Avenue and King Avenue West became important east–west routes, while 24th Street West connected the district with central Billings and the wider road network. This period established the low-rise, spacious character that still distinguishes West End from the older commercial streets closer to downtown.

Retail Development and Rimrock Mall

The opening of Rimrock Mall in 1975 marked a major shift in Billings’ retail geography and strengthened West End’s role as a regional shopping destination. Large-scale retail brought department stores, speciality shops, restaurants and extensive parking to the western side of the city, drawing customers from Billings and communities across south-central Montana.
