History of Aksarben Village

The Ak-Sar-Ben Idea

The area’s name comes from Ak-Sar-Ben, the Omaha civic and fraternal organisation established in 1895 to promote Nebraska and the wider region. Its name, Nebraska written backwards, expressed a deliberately local identity. The organisation developed a major entertainment and community complex in south-west Omaha, helping make the site a regional meeting place rather than simply an outlying tract of land. The name survived the later redevelopment and continues to connect the contemporary village with Omaha’s distinctive civic history.

The Racecourse Era

Ak-Sar-Ben’s racetrack opened in 1920 and became one of Omaha’s best-known sporting venues. Racing, exhibitions and public events drew visitors from across Nebraska and neighbouring states, while the wider complex included facilities associated with civic celebrations and entertainment. For much of the twentieth century, the site’s identity was tied to horses, grandstands and large gatherings. When the racetrack closed in 1995, Omaha lost a familiar regional institution and the substantial property entered a long period of uncertainty about its future.

Redevelopment after Racing

After the racetrack’s closure, the former complex was gradually cleared and replanned rather than preserved as a complete historic ensemble. The Aksarben Village development that emerged in the 2000s introduced a mixture of housing, offices, restaurants and public space, reflecting Omaha’s wider shift towards mixed-use redevelopment and new employment districts. Stinson Park became a central landscape feature, giving the project an identifiable civic focus while retaining the historic name in a new urban form.

A University and Entertainment District

The district’s later character was strengthened by its relationship with the University of Nebraska Omaha and the opening of Baxter Arena in 2015. The arena provided a major home for university athletics and a venue for concerts and other events, adding regular visitor activity to an area already supported by restaurants, offices and housing. Aksarben Cinema and the Inner Rail Food Hall further established the village as a destination for film, food and leisure, even as the former racecourse’s physical landscape disappeared.
