Walking
From the heart of Thamel, head east on Tridevi Marg. Continue walking for about 10-15 minutes until you reach a large intersection. Here, you will see the entrance to Basantapur Durbar Square on your left. Follow the signs that lead you to Kathmandu Durbar Square. The square is a well-known landmark, so don't hesitate to ask locals for directions if needed.
Rickshaw
You can hire a rickshaw from various points in Thamel. Simply negotiate the fare with the driver before starting your journey; it usually costs around 200-300 NPR (Nepalese Rupees) to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Ask the driver to take you to 'Basantapur Durbar Square' to ensure they understand your destination. The ride will take approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic.
Local Bus
While less common for tourists, you can take a local bus from Thamel to get closer to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Walk to the bus stop at Ratna Park, which is around a 15-minute walk from Thamel. Buses to 'Basantapur' are frequent. The fare is very cheap, typically around 20 NPR, but note that buses can be crowded and may not have clear signs. Once you get off, it's a short walk to the square.
