If you are traveling by car from any location in Koshi Zone, head towards the East-West Highway (also known as Mahendra Highway). Drive west until you reach the junction that leads towards Kathmandu. Follow the signs for Kathmandu, which will involve navigating through smaller roads as you approach the valley. Once you enter Kathmandu, follow the main roads leading to Basantapur area. Look for signs directing you to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Parking is limited, so be prepared to park in designated areas nearby and walk to the square.
Bus
For budget travelers, taking a bus is a cost-effective option. From major towns in Koshi Zone like Biratnagar or Itahari, board a bus heading to Kathmandu. The journey will take approximately 8-10 hours depending on traffic. Upon reaching Kathmandu, disembark at the New Bus Park in Gongabu. From there, you can take a local microbus or taxi to Basantapur area. If you opt for a microbus, it will cost around NPR 30-50, while a taxi can range from NPR 300-500 based on negotiation and traffic. Ensure you ask the driver to drop you off near Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Taxi or Ride-Hailing Service
If you prefer a more direct route and don’t mind spending a bit extra, you can hire a taxi or use a ride-hailing service like Pathao or Tootle. Simply request a ride to 'Kathmandu Durbar Square' or 'Basantapur'. Depending on your starting point in Koshi Zone, the fare will vary, but expect to pay between NPR 3,000 to NPR 5,000 for a one-way trip. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.
