Car
From Makalu Base Camp, you will first need to return to the nearest road access point. This usually involves a trek back to the nearest village. Typically, this is either the village of Num or the village of Sittichaur, depending on your route. Once you reach Num or Sittichaur, you can catch a local taxi or rent a car to take you to Tumlingtar, which is the closest airport. The journey may take around 4-6 hours depending on road conditions. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand. Costs may vary, but expect to pay around NPR 2000-3000 for the ride.
Public Transportation
After trekking back to Num or Sittichaur, you can also opt for local buses or shared jeeps to Tumlingtar. Buses usually leave early in the morning, so ensure you check the schedule the day before. The bus ride can take approximately 6-8 hours. Cost for a bus ticket is around NPR 1000-1500. Upon reaching Tumlingtar, you can catch a flight to Lukla to continue your trek to Everest Base Camp.
Flight
From Tumlingtar, you can book a short domestic flight to Lukla. The flight duration is about 20-30 minutes, offering stunning views of the Himalayas. It is highly recommended to book your flight in advance due to limited seats and high demand, especially during the trekking season. Expect to pay around NPR 6000-8000 for a one-way ticket.
Trekking
Once you arrive in Lukla, the trek to Everest Base Camp begins. You will follow the well-marked trails that lead you through picturesque villages such as Phakding and Namche Bazaar. It is advisable to have a trekking guide, as they can assist with navigation and local knowledge. The trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp generally takes about 8-12 days, depending on your pace and acclimatization needs.
