Car
If you are traveling by car, you would typically start your journey from Pokhara. From Pokhara, drive to Jomsom, which is approximately 8-10 hours depending on road conditions. The road from Pokhara to Jomsom is scenic but can be bumpy in places. Once you reach Jomsom, you will need to hire a local jeep or a taxi that can take you to Lo Manthang, which is the capital of Upper Mustang. This leg of the journey takes around 3-4 hours. Ensure you have a valid TIMS card and Upper Mustang permit, as these are required to enter the region.
Public Transportation
For those opting for public transportation, start in Pokhara by taking a tourist bus to Jomsom. Several companies operate this service, and the journey usually takes about 8-10 hours. After reaching Jomsom, you can catch a local jeep or minibus to Lo Manthang. The bus leaves early in the morning, so be sure to check the schedule ahead of time. The jeep ride to Lo Manthang will cost around NPR 1,500-2,000 per person and takes about 3-4 hours. Remember to have your permits ready for inspection at checkpoints.
Trekking
If you are already in Jomsom and looking for an adventurous route, you can trek from Jomsom to Lo Manthang. This trek usually takes about 3 to 4 days and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. You will follow the Kali Gandaki river valley and pass through traditional villages. Make sure to carry enough food, water, and gear, and be prepared for altitude acclimatization. A guide is highly recommended for this trek for navigation and cultural insights.
