History of Hoboken

Hoboken, New Jersey was originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans before Dutch colonists arrived in the early 1600s. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was later acquired by English settlers. In 1784, Colonel John Stevens purchased the land that would become Hoboken, laying the groundwork for its development.
Hoboken is celebrated as the birthplace of baseball. On June 19, 1846, the first officially recorded, organized baseball game was played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken. The New York Nine defeated the Knickerbocker Club in a game that is now a cornerstone of American sports history.
