You can also take a NJ Transit bus from Jersey City. Head to the nearest bus stop for NJ Transit on Marin Blvd or Newark Ave and take the 119 bus towards 'New York Port Authority'. After about 30 minutes, you will arrive at Port Authority Bus Terminal. From there, walk to the 'Times Square-42nd St' subway station and take the 'A' or 'C' subway lines towards 'Brooklyn'. After 2 stops, get off at 'West 4th St - Washington Sq' station. Exit the subway and walk south on Washington Square.
