Public Transit
From Paterson, walk to the NJ Transit Paterson Station. Take the train towards Hoboken and get off at Secaucus Junction. From there, transfer to a train heading to New York Penn Station. Once at Penn Station, exit onto 34th Street and walk towards 8th Avenue. At 34th Street, take the 6 subway train uptown towards Pelham Bay Park and get off at 116th Street. Exit the station and walk east towards the East River. Continue walking until you reach the East River Esplanade.
Bus
Walk to the nearest NJ Transit bus stop in Paterson. Take the NJ Transit bus number 161 towards New York Port Authority Bus Terminal. Once you arrive at the terminal, walk towards 42nd Street and take the subway 6 train uptown towards Pelham Bay Park. Get off at 116th Street and exit the station. Walk east towards the East River until you reach the East River Esplanade.
Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and up for a long walk, start from the downtown area of Paterson and head south towards the Passaic River. Follow the river north until you reach the border of Paterson and cross into New York City. After crossing, continue walking east towards the East River. Walk along the riverfront until you reach the East River Esplanade. This walk is approximately 6 miles and may take about 2 hours.
