Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car within Gila National Forest, first ensure you are on NM-15. From there, head south towards the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Continue on NM-15 for approximately 24 miles until you reach the junction with Forest Road 15. Turn left onto Forest Road 15 and follow the signs for the Gila Cliff Dwellings. The trailhead is well-marked and located at the end of this road, which is approximately 2 miles further in. Note that Forest Road 15 may be unpaved and could require a vehicle with higher clearance, especially after rain.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options to Gila Cliff Dwellings Trailhead are limited. The nearest bus service is in Silver City, NM. From Silver City, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead, which is about 45 miles away. Ensure to book your ride in advance as services may not be readily available in this remote area. Expect to pay approximately $60-$100 for a one-way trip. Once at the trailhead, you can explore the area on foot.

• Hiking

  If you are already hiking in Gila National Forest and are near the Gila River, you can take the Gila River Trail to reach the Gila Cliff Dwellings Trailhead. This route is scenic but requires good navigation skills as it involves some off-trail hiking. Follow the Gila River north, then look for the signs leading up to the trailhead. This route can be challenging and is recommended for experienced hikers only.
