Getting There

  • Bus

    From Hamilton's central bus station, take the 'Hauraki Connection' bus towards Tirau. Make sure to check the bus schedule for the most up-to-date times. After approximately 35 minutes, get off at the stop located at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Maungatautari Road. From there, walk south on Maungatautari Road for about 15 minutes until you reach the intersection with Hydro Road. Turn left onto Hydro Road, and continue walking for another 10-15 minutes until you arrive at Karapiro Dam.

  • Bicycle

    If you're cycling, start from Hamilton's city center and head south on Victoria Street. Continue on Victoria Street until it turns into State Highway 1. Follow State Highway 1 for approximately 12 kilometers, which should take around 40-50 minutes. Turn left onto Maungatautari Road and continue for about 3 kilometers. Finally, turn left onto Hydro Road, and you'll find Karapiro Dam a short ride down the road.

  • Walking

    For those who enjoy a long walk, start at Hamilton Gardens and head towards the Waikato River. Follow the river path south until you reach the intersection with State Highway 1. Cross over the highway carefully and continue south along Maungatautari Road. This walk is approximately 18 kilometers and may take around 4-5 hours. After about 3 kilometers on Maungatautari Road, turn left onto Hydro Road. Karapiro Dam will be a short walk down Hydro Road.
