Start from the Nelson city center. Head to the bus stop located at the intersection of Trafalgar Street and Hardy Street. Take the 'Maitai Valley' bus, which runs regularly. Inform the driver that you are headed to Coppermine Trail. The bus will take you along the Maitai River Road. Get off at the stop closest to the Maitai Dam, which is about a 20-minute bus ride. From the bus stop, you can walk towards the Coppermine Trailhead, which is about a 15-minute walk uphill.

Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Nelson. Start your journey from the city center and head towards the Maitai Valley Road. Follow the road, which will lead you to the Maitai Dam. The ride is approximately 10 km and will take around 30-40 minutes depending on your cycling speed. Once you reach the Maitai Dam, you will see the signs for the Coppermine Trail. Park your bicycle in the designated area before starting your hike.

Walking
For those who enjoy walking, you can start from the Nelson city center and follow the Maitai River walking track, which is a scenic route. Head towards the Maitai Valley on the walking path that runs alongside the river. This will take you to the Maitai Dam. It is approximately a 5 km walk and will take about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive at the dam, follow the signs pointing to the Coppermine Trailhead, which is a short walk from the dam.
