Getting There

  • Car

    From Invercargill, take State Highway 1 (SH1) north towards Gore. Continue on SH1 until you reach the junction with State Highway 99 (SH99) at Mataura. Turn left onto SH99 and follow it until you reach the junction with State Highway 6 (SH6) at Lumsden. Turn right onto SH6 and continue toward Te Anau. Just before reaching Te Anau, take the exit onto State Highway 94 (SH94) towards Milford Sound. Follow SH94 until you arrive at the Yates Point turn-off. The final stretch is a gravel road leading directly to Yates Point. Please note that some rental car companies may have restrictions on driving on gravel roads, so check with your provider. Expect to spend around 2 hours driving from Invercargill to Yates Point.

    Take a bus from Invercargill to Te Anau. There are daily services available; check the InterCity or local bus operators for schedules. Once in Te Anau, you will need to arrange a taxi or shuttle service to take you to Yates Point, as public transport does not directly service that area. The taxi ride from Te Anau to Yates Point will take approximately 30 minutes and may cost around NZD 70-100. Make sure to pre-book your taxi as they may not be readily available in the area.
