Getting There

  • Bus

    From Tauranga city center, head to the nearest bus stop. Take the Baybus Route 1 towards Rotorua. The bus will travel along State Highway 29 and then merge onto State Highway 1. Stay on the bus for approximately 30-40 minutes until you reach Tīrau. Once you arrive in Tīrau, disembark at the Tīrau town center bus stop, which is close to the Tirau i-SITE Visitor Centre. The i-SITE is located just a short walk from the bus stop, approximately 5 minutes away.

    If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the rental shops in Tauranga. Start at the Tauranga waterfront and head towards the Mount Maunganui area. Follow the cycle path that leads you to State Highway 2, then merge into State Highway 29. Continue on this highway until you reach Tīrau. The journey will take around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your cycling speed. Once in Tīrau, look for the signs directing you to the Tirau i-SITE Visitor Centre.

    Walking to Tīrau from Tauranga is quite a long trek, approximately 40 kilometers. However, if you are up for the challenge, you can set out from the Tauranga city center. Head towards Elizabeth Street and continue towards State Highway 29. Follow this highway all the way to Tīrau, which will take approximately 8-10 hours. Make sure to take plenty of breaks, stay hydrated, and enjoy the picturesque views along the way. Once you arrive in Tīrau, the Tirau i-SITE Visitor Centre will be easily visible.
