History of Roanoke Region

In 1587, a group of 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island under the leadership of John White. This settlement, sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh, became known as the 'Lost Colony' when John White returned from a supply trip to England in 1590 to find the colony deserted without a trace. The only clue left behind was the word 'CROATOAN' carved into a post. The fate of the colonists remains one of America's oldest unsolved mysteries.
During the American Revolution, the Roanoke Region played a significant role as local militias joined forces with the Continental Army to fight against British rule. The region's waterways and strategic location made it an important area for troop movements and supplies.
Established in 1863 during the American Civil War, the Roanoke Island Freedmen’s Colony was a haven for formerly enslaved African Americans. The colony was set up by the Union Army to provide education, housing, and employment to the freedmen, making it a significant site for the history of emancipation and Reconstruction in North Carolina.
