History of Minot

Souris River Country

The Souris River valley around present-day Minot has long been part of the northern Plains, used by Indigenous peoples for travel, hunting and seasonal settlement. The wider region was associated with communities including the Assiniboine and Cree, while Métis families also formed part of the cultural landscape connected to the river and prairie trade routes. European-American settlement expanded during the nineteenth century as the United States consolidated control of the territory and railways pushed across Dakota. The river's water, grasslands and relatively sheltered valley helped make the area suitable for a new town, but Minot's decisive transformation came through transport rather than through an ancient urban centre.

The Railway Creates Minot

Minot emerged in 1886 when the Great Northern Railway reached the Souris River valley during its westward construction. The town was named for Henry D. Minot, a Boston financier and railway associate, and its population grew rapidly around the station, railway yards and businesses serving construction crews, farmers and travellers. This sudden expansion explains the nickname “Magic City”. Minot was incorporated in 1887, and the railway established its enduring role as the city's economic and geographical backbone.
