Bismarck was founded in 1872 and was originally named 'Edwinton' after Edwin Ferry Johnson, a chief engineer for the Northern Pacific Railway. The city was renamed Bismarck in 1873 in honor of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in hopes of attracting German immigrants to settle in the area.

In 1883, Bismarck was designated as the capital of the Dakota Territory, and it retained this status when North Dakota became a state in 1889. The strategic location of Bismarck along the Missouri River played a crucial role in this decision.
