The hill was first known as Mount Ida, a name still preserved in nearby references, before becoming Mount Adams in the nineteenth century. Its elevated position east of Cincinnati made it attractive for institutions and residences, while its slopes remained more difficult to develop than the river plain. The eventual name is generally associated with John Quincy Adams, although the neighbourhood’s identity formed gradually through local usage rather than a single planned foundation. Its terrain has continued to influence the street pattern, producing steep approaches, winding roads and elevated viewpoints.

Roman Catholic institutions helped shape Mount Adams during the nineteenth century. The Church of the Immaculata, completed in 1860, became the neighbourhood’s most recognisable religious building and a focus for worship and community life. Its hilltop setting gave it prominence across the surrounding city, while the surrounding parish landscape contributed to Mount Adams’s long association with Catholic Cincinnati. The church remains an important architectural and cultural reference point even as the neighbourhood’s population and commercial life have changed.

The creation and improvement of Eden Park transformed Mount Adams’s upper slopes into one of Cincinnati’s principal civic landscapes. The park’s gardens, reservoirs and viewpoints introduced public recreation alongside the neighbourhood’s residential streets. Cultural institutions followed and expanded that role: the Cincinnati Art Museum opened in Mount Adams in 1886, establishing a major artistic presence, while the Krohn Conservatory later added a carefully cultivated botanical attraction in Eden Park. Together, these institutions made the hill an enduring destination for art, gardens and public leisure.

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Mount Adams retained its residential scale while developing a stronger connection with restaurants, bars, galleries and performing arts. Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, established in the neighbourhood in 1968, reinforced its role as a cultural destination. Older homes, churches and institutional buildings now stand alongside renovated properties and small businesses, reflecting gradual change rather than wholesale redevelopment. The neighbourhood’s present identity rests on the combination of steep historic streets, established cultural institutions, parkland and a compact evening economy.
