History of Wooster

Foundation on the Ohio Frontier

Wooster was laid out in 1808 by John Bever, William Henry and Joseph H. Larwill, and was named for Major General David Wooster, an American military officer of the Revolutionary War. Its location in what was then a developing frontier settlement made it a natural place for commerce, administration and new farms. Wooster became the seat of Wayne County when the county was organised in 1812. Early growth followed the establishment of roads and public institutions, linking the settlement with neighbouring communities and markets. The city’s street plan and courthouse-centred civic identity still reflect this early role as an organising point for the surrounding agricultural district.

A County Seat Takes Shape

During the nineteenth century, Wooster grew as Wayne County’s governmental and commercial centre. Agricultural production in the surrounding townships supported merchants, craftspeople, mills and transport businesses, while churches, schools and civic organisations helped establish a settled community. The College of Wooster
