Car
If you're driving, start from Al Hamra and head towards the mountain roads leading to Jebel Shams. Follow the main road (Road 21) for approximately 30 kilometers. You will pass through the village of Al Hamra, where you can stop for supplies or refreshments. As you approach Jebel Shams, look for signs directing you to the 'Jebel Shams Resort' or 'Jebel Shams Viewpoint.' The roads are generally well-maintained, but be prepared for some steep and winding sections as you ascend the mountain. Parking is available at various viewpoints.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transport, take a bus from Muscat to Al Hamra, which typically departs from the main bus station in Muscat. Upon arrival in Al Hamra, you may need to hire a taxi or arrange for a local ride to take you to Jebel Shams, as public transportation does not extend directly to the mountain. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand or ask if the driver has a meter. The taxi ride should cost approximately 10 to 15 Omani Rials.
Taxi
For a more direct approach, you can hire a taxi from Al Hamra to Jebel Shams. This option is ideal if you are traveling in a group, as the cost can be shared. Ensure that you agree on a round trip with the driver, as there may not be taxis readily available at the summit. The journey will take about 30 minutes, and the fare typically ranges from 10 to 20 Omani Rials, depending on your negotiation.
Hiking
For the adventurous, consider hiking from the base of Jebel Shams. Starting from the village of Al Hamra, follow the marked trails heading towards the summit. The hike can take several hours and is recommended for those with a good fitness level. Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and a map or GPS device. There are no fees to access the hiking trails, but safety is paramount, so inform someone of your plans.
