Car
If you are driving, start on US-20 E from any location in the Cascade Mountains. Follow US-20 E for approximately 30 miles until you reach the turn-off for OR-22 S. Take the exit toward OR-22 S and continue for about 20 miles. Look for signs for Santiam Pass and then merge onto OR-22 S. Continue on OR-22 S for roughly 15 miles until you reach the junction with OR-226. Take OR-226 towards Detroit Lake. After about 10 miles, turn left onto Breitenbush Road, which will lead you toward the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness area. Follow the signs to the Mt. Jefferson trailhead and parking area. Be aware that parking may be limited, and there could be a fee for parking in the wilderness area.
Public Transportation
If you are relying on public transportation, take a bus from Salem to Detroit. Check the schedule for the Cherriots bus service to ensure you plan your trip accordingly. Once you arrive in Detroit, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the Mt. Jefferson trailhead, as public transport does not reach this remote location directly. Be sure to confirm taxi availability in advance, as options may be limited. Additionally, check for any applicable fees for the bus and taxi rides.
Hiking
Once you reach the Mt. Jefferson trailhead, be prepared to hike. There are several trails leading to different viewpoints of the mountain. The most popular is the Jefferson Park Trail, which provides access to stunning views of the mountain and surrounding wilderness. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry water and snacks. Remember to check the weather conditions and trail status before you go, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
