    From Bend, Oregon, take US-97 S for approximately 29 miles. After reaching the intersection with OR-31, turn left onto OR-31 S. Continue on OR-31 S for about 20 miles until you reach the entrance of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Follow the signs toward the Big Obsidian Flow Trailhead, which will be approximately 6 miles from the monument entrance. There is a parking fee of $5 per vehicle, or you can use an annual pass if you have one.

  • Public Transportation

    Unfortunately, there is no direct public transportation to the Big Obsidian Flow Trailhead. However, you can take the Cascade East Transit bus from Bend to La Pine. Once you arrive at La Pine, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the trailhead, which is about 14 miles away. Be sure to check the bus schedule ahead of time for availability and plan accordingly.

  • Bicycle

    If you are cycling from Bend, you can take the same route as driving. Follow US-97 S and then OR-31 S. Be prepared for a challenging ride as the roads can be busy with traffic.
