Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, the most common route to Sumpter Valley Dredge is via Highway 26. From La Grande, take I-84 E and exit at La Grande's exit 265 toward US-30 W/US-191 S. Follow signs for Highway 26 W. Continue on Highway 26 for approximately 40 miles until you reach Sumpter. Once in Sumpter, turn onto Austin St. and follow it until you reach 211 Austin St, where the Sumpter Valley Dredge is located. There is no admission fee to access the park, but parking may be limited during peak times.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are quite limited in Eastern Oregon, but you can utilize local bus services. Start by taking the Valley Transit bus service from La Grande to Baker City. From Baker City, you can call a taxi or rideshare service to reach Sumpter, which is approximately 30 miles away. Make sure to check the Valley Transit schedule in advance, as services may not be frequent. Expect to pay a fare for the bus service, which typically ranges from $2 to $5, and additional costs for the taxi or rideshare from Baker City to Sumpter.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous, biking to Sumpter Valley Dredge can be a beautiful experience. From Baker City, take Highway 7 towards Sumpter. The distance is approximately 30 miles and the route is relatively scenic, but be aware of the traffic and ensure you have appropriate biking gear. Make sure to plan for breaks, as there are limited services along the way.

• Walking/Hiking

  If you are already in Sumpter and want to explore the area on foot, the Sumpter Valley Dredge is easily accessible by walking. Starting from the center of Sumpter, head south on Austin St. It’s a short walk (approximately 0.5 miles) to the dredge site. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain may vary.
