Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Leh, the capital of Ladakh. Take the Leh-Srinagar highway (NH 1D) and head towards Kargil. After approximately 50 km, turn left towards the Dras sector. Continue driving for around 80 km until you reach the Kharfaq village. From here, follow the local signs or ask locals for further directions to Kharfaq Lake, which is about a 3 km trek from the village. Ensure that your vehicle is suitable for rough terrains, as the roads may be challenging.
Public Transportation
To reach Kharfaq Lake using public transportation, take a bus from Leh to Kargil. The journey typically takes around 5-6 hours. Upon reaching Kargil, you will need to hire a local taxi or shared vehicle to Kharfaq village. The taxi ride from Kargil to Kharfaq takes approximately 2 hours. Once in Kharfaq village, you will need to trek approximately 3 km to reach Kharfaq Lake. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance and plan your trip accordingly.
Trekking
Regardless of whether you arrive by car or public transport, the last leg of your journey to Kharfaq Lake involves trekking. From Kharfaq village, follow the trail leading to the lake. The trek is about 3 km and takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on your pace. The trail may be steep and uneven, so wear appropriate trekking shoes and carry water and snacks.
