Car
If you are traveling by car, head towards Kalam Valley from Mingora, the capital of Swat. The most common route is via the Madyan-Kalam Road. Upon reaching Madyan, continue on the road for about 30 kilometers until you arrive in Kalam. From Kalam, take the road towards Matiltan. The road will eventually lead you to the Ushu River tributary. The last stretch to Kalam Glacier is a trek, so ensure your vehicle is parked safely before proceeding on foot. Expect to pay for parking if you use designated areas.
Public Transportation
To reach Kalam Glacier using public transportation, first take a bus or van from Mingora to Kalam. The fare is typically around 300-500 PKR. Once in Kalam, you can either hire a local jeep (approximately 1,500-2,500 PKR) to take you closer to the glacier or trek from Kalam towards Matiltan. The trek is approximately 15 km and can take several hours, so ensure you are well-prepared with water and snacks.
Trekking
Once you have reached Matiltan, the final approach to Kalam Glacier is on foot. The trek from Matiltan to the glacier takes about 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. Follow the trail along the Ushu River tributary, enjoying the stunning views. Be prepared for rough terrain and carry a map or use a GPS device to ensure you stay on track. It's advisable to hire a local guide for this section, which may cost around 1,000-2,000 PKR.
