Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Car
If you are driving from Huaraz, take the Avenida Luzuriaga road heading south. Continue on this road until you reach the junction with the Carretera Huaraz-Pativilca. Turn left onto this highway and follow it for about 30 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to Laguna Rajucolta. After approximately 1 hour of driving, you will reach the town of Recuay. From Recuay, continue on the road towards the Antamina mine, and follow local signage that leads you towards Laguna Rajucolta. The last part of the drive may involve unpaved roads, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Expect to pay for parking near the lake.
Public Transportation
To reach Laguna Rajucolta via public transportation, start by taking a colectivo (shared taxi) from Huaraz to Recuay. Colectivos depart frequently from the main terminal and cost around 10-15 soles. Once you arrive in Recuay, you can either hire a local taxi to take you directly to Laguna Rajucolta or look for local buses heading towards Antamina. If you opt for the taxi, expect to pay around 30-50 soles. The taxi driver should be familiar with the route to the lake. If you take the bus, you may need to walk the last stretch as the buses may not go all the way to the lake, so be prepared for a short hike.
