Car
If you are driving from Colca Canyon, head south on the main road (Route 34A) towards the town of Chivay. From Chivay, continue driving south to the town of Arequipa. Once in Arequipa, take Route 34 to reach the intersection with Route 30A. Follow Route 30A towards Cotahuasi. The road is winding and can be challenging, so drive carefully. After approximately 4 hours on Route 30A, you will reach Cotahuasi. The Cañón de Cotahuasi is located near the center of Cotahuasi, at coordinates -15.2041072, -72.8991795.
Bus
To reach Cañón de Cotahuasi by public transportation, start at Chivay. From Chivay, take a bus to Arequipa. Buses run frequently and the fare is around 15-25 PEN. Once in Arequipa, head to the terminal de buses and look for a bus to Cotahuasi. The fare to Cotahuasi is approximately 30-40 PEN, and the journey takes about 6-8 hours due to the mountainous roads. Make sure to confirm the bus schedules in advance, as they may vary. Once you arrive in Cotahuasi, you can ask locals for directions to Cañón de Cotahuasi, which is centrally located.
Taxi or Rideshare
If you prefer a more direct route and personal transport, consider hiring a taxi from Chivay to Cotahuasi. The cost may be higher, typically around 300-400 PEN, but it will take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Ensure to negotiate the fare before starting your journey. Upon reaching Cotahuasi, the Cañón de Cotahuasi is easily accessible and you can ask locals for the best route to the canyon.
