Walking
From the center of Gisenyi, head towards the shore of Lake Kivu. Walk along Avenue du Lac, which is the main road that runs parallel to the lake. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will reach the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Keep heading towards the north until you reach the Gisenyi border post. Once you arrive at the border, you can ask locals for directions to the starting point of the hike to Mt. Nyiragongo, which is located just across the border in the DRC.

Bicycle
Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Gisenyi. Start at the main market and ride towards Avenue du Lac. Follow the road as it curves along the lake for about 1.5 kilometers. When you reach the border post between Rwanda and the DRC, park your bicycle there and inquire about the hiking routes to Mt. Nyiragongo. You may need to walk from the border post to the designated starting point for the hike.

Public Transport
Catch a moto-taxi from any point in Gisenyi. Tell the driver you want to go to the Nyiragongo border. They will take you to the border post between Rwanda and the DRC, which is approximately 10 minutes away. Upon arrival, ask for directions to the starting point of the Mt. Nyiragongo hike. Be prepared to walk from the border post to the official hiking entrance.
