Car Rental
If you have rented a car, start from the center of Gitarama. Head northeast on Avenue de la Révolution (the main road) towards the Rwandan National Police Station. After about 1.5 km, turn left onto the road signposted towards Kinigi. Continue on this road for approximately 20 km until you reach the town of Kinigi. Once in Kinigi, follow the signs for Nyarugina Caves, which are located just outside the town. There is no entrance fee for the caves, but ensure you have cash for any local guides you may wish to hire.
Public Transportation
To reach Nyarugina Caves via public transport, start by heading to the Gitarama bus station. Look for a minibus (known as a 'taxi collectif') heading towards Kinigi. The fare should be around RWF 1,000. The journey takes about 45 minutes. Once you arrive in Kinigi, you may need to hire a motorcycle taxi (known as an 'moto') to reach the caves, which should cost around RWF 2,000. Make sure to negotiate the price beforehand. The moto will take you directly to the entrance of the caves.
