How to get there

The principal gateways are Prievidza and Bojnice, reached by road and regional rail from western and central Slovakia. Train and bus connections link Prievidza with larger Slovak centres, although journeys may involve a change at a regional interchange. Bratislava Airport and Vienna Airport are outside Horná Nitra and are practical international gateways for visitors continuing by road or public transport. From Bratislava, road travel generally takes longer than the map distance suggests because routes cross several Slovak towns and upland areas.

Transportation

Prievidza and Bojnice are connected by local buses, and the main towns have regional bus links to Handlová, Nováky and surrounding communities. Safety

In churches and religious buildings, dress and behave respectfully, particularly during services. Follow marked paths, close gates, take litter away and do not enter abandoned mines, industrial compounds or restricted forest areas. Tipping is customary but discretionary in restaurants and cafés; rounding up or leaving around ten per cent for good service is generally understood. Ask before photographing people, private property or working industrial sites.

History of Horná Nitra

Prehistoric settlement and the Bojnice area

The upper Nitra valley has been occupied since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence showing repeated settlement in and around the region’s river valleys and limestone landscapes. The Bojnice area is especially important for archaeological research: caves and other sites in the vicinity have produced evidence connected with early human occupation, while later prehistoric communities used the fertile valley and nearby uplands. These remains are part of a much longer story than the castles and industrial towns visible today, demonstrating that Horná Nitra’s geography has supported movement and settlement for thousands of years.

Medieval Bojnice and the Nitra valley

During the medieval period, settlements in the upper Nitra valley developed within the Kingdom of Hungary and were linked by routes running north from the Nitra basin. Bojnice Castle began as a medieval fortified site and controlled an important local centre, later becoming associated with aristocratic owners and estate administration. Prievidza also acquired town privileges in the medieval era, establishing the urban and commercial role it retains today. Churches, old street patterns and fragments of historic buildings preserve elements of this period, although the region has been repeatedly altered by rebuilding and modern growth.

Aristocratic estates and the transformation of Bojnice Castle

Bojnice Castle passed through several noble families and gradually changed from a defensive stronghold into a residence. Several communities around Nitrianske Pravno and the upper Nitra valley were shaped by medieval and early modern settlement by German-speaking colonists, commonly known in Slovakia as the Hauerland communities. These settlers contributed to local agriculture, crafts, town life and distinctive forms of vernacular architecture. Population movements and the political upheavals of the twentieth century severely disrupted this cultural landscape, including the departure or expulsion of many German-speaking inhabitants after the Second World War. Lignite mining and industrialisation

The discovery and industrial exploitation of lignite transformed Horná Nitra during the twentieth century, particularly around Handlová and Nováky. Mining brought rail connections, new housing, technical employment and an influx of workers, changing settlements that had previously been primarily agricultural. The industry became important to Czechoslovakia’s energy system and to the social identity of the region, but underground extraction also altered landscapes and created long-term environmental and economic challenges. War, the Slovak National Uprising and post-war change

The mountainous terrain and industrial importance of Horná Nitra gave the region a significant role during the Second World War and the Slovak National Uprising of 1944.
