Tekov is a historic region of central and western Slovakia, spread across the lower Hron valley and the surrounding hills. It is not a current administrative unit, but its name remains useful for understanding an area whose landscapes and settlements developed around the Hron River, old mining districts and the medieval county centred on Levice. Vineyards and open agricultural country dominate parts of the south, while the terrain becomes markedly hillier towards Žarnovica, Nová Baňa and the Vtáčnik foothills. Tekov has no single gateway, so the best arrival point depends on the itinerary. Levice is reached by road and railway from Bratislava, Nitra and central Slovak towns, while Žarnovica and Nová Baňa lie on the main Hron valley transport corridor. Currency and Payment
Tekov uses the euro (EUR), as does Slovakia nationally. Card and contactless payment are common in hotels, supermarkets, petrol stations and established restaurants in Levice, Žarnovica and other larger settlements. Carry some cash for village cafés, small producers, local events, rural transport and occasional museum or monument payments. Smaller businesses may have limited opening arrangements and may not accept cards, particularly outside the main towns.
Safety
Tekov is generally a straightforward region for visitors, but normal precautions apply in towns, at railway stations and in parked vehicles. Walking and cycling require attention to uneven paths, changing weather, ticks and traffic on minor roads. Forest routes around the northern part of the region can be poorly signposted away from established trails, while open southern country can become hot in summer. Do not enter abandoned mine workings, castle ruins or industrial structures unless access is clearly authorised.

History of Tekov

Early settlement and Great Moravian influences

The Hron valley and surrounding uplands have been occupied since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of communities using fertile river terraces, wooded hills and mineral resources. During the early medieval period, this part of present-day Slovakia stood within the wider cultural and political world shaped by Great Moravia. Fortified sites, rural settlements and later Christian institutions established patterns that continued after the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Although much of the visible architecture in Tekov is later, the region's position along the Hron helped make it a long-standing corridor between southern lowlands and the interior.

The medieval Tekov county

Tekov developed as a historic county of the Kingdom of Hungary during the Middle Ages. Its administrative and economic life was linked to the Hron, market settlements and royal or noble estates. Levice gradually became the region's most important centre, while smaller towns and villages served agriculture, forestry and trade. Churches, manors and fortified sites from later centuries reflect the fragmented authority of nobles, ecclesiastical institutions and the Crown. The historic county was considerably broader than any single modern district, which is why Tekov today is best understood as a cultural-historical region rather than an administrative one.

Mining and the growth of market towns

Mineral resources shaped several northern and north-eastern parts of Tekov. Pukanec developed as a mining settlement associated particularly with gold and silver extraction, while Nová Baňa became one of the region's notable mining towns. Mining brought specialist skills, commercial links and German-speaking settlers to parts of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, leaving architectural and social traces that differed from those of purely agricultural villages. Production fluctuated over time, and many workings declined, but the town plans, churches and industrial memories of the mining districts remain important to Tekov's identity.

Castles and the Ottoman frontier

After the Ottoman conquest of central Hungary in the sixteenth century, Tekov lay within a militarised zone behind the frontier and its settlements carried greater defensive importance. Levice Castle was strengthened and became a significant stronghold, while hill castles such as Revište watched routes through the Hron country. Raids, taxation and military obligations affected both noble estates and village communities. The frontier period left ruins, fortification earthworks and stories embedded in local history, even though the region was not continuously occupied by Ottoman forces in the way that some southern territories were.

Agriculture, estates and rural society

From the early modern period into the nineteenth century, most Tekov communities depended on farming, vineyards, forestry and small-scale crafts. Large estates influenced landholding and employment, particularly around places such as Topoľčianky, while market towns connected rural producers with wider trade networks. The cultivation of vines was strongest in warmer southern districts, whereas the hills supported woodland management, livestock and mining-related work. Villages developed distinctive houses, chapels, wine cellars and agricultural layouts, many of which still give the countryside its visual character.

Railways, industry and the twentieth century

The arrival of railways and the expansion of modern industry altered the Hron valley and its towns during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Transport improved access to markets, mining districts and larger industrial centres, while Levice, Žarnovica and the settlements around Tlmače acquired more modern economic roles. The twentieth century also brought collectivised agriculture, state-owned industry and substantial social change under Czechoslovak socialism. After 1989, some traditional industries contracted, but food production, services, forestry, engineering and cultural tourism continued to shape the regional economy.

Tekov as a living cultural region

Today Tekov survives primarily through historical memory, local institutions, dialect and landscape rather than through a formal administrative structure. Museums in Levice and other towns, restored churches, mining traces, traditional villages and regional foodways help maintain that identity. Contemporary Tekov is also connected to wider Slovak life through regional roads, railways, wine production, manufacturing and tourism. The coexistence of agricultural south, industrial Hron settlements and forested mining uplands is central to understanding why the region cannot be reduced to a single town or landscape type.
