Walking
From the center of Custer, head south on 7th Street towards Mount Rushmore Road (US-16). Continue straight until you reach the intersection with US-16. Turn left onto US-16 and walk for about 0.6 miles. You will see the entrance to Custer State Park on your right. Enter the park and continue walking straight along the main road. Keep an eye out for signs directing you to the Rankin Ridge Trail. The trailhead is located approximately 2 miles from the park entrance, on your left side.
Biking
Start at the Custer County Courthouse and head south on 7th Street towards US-16. When you reach the intersection with US-16, turn left. Continue biking along US-16 for about 0.6 miles, then enter Custer State Park on your right. Follow the main park road for about 2 miles until you see the signs for Rankin Ridge Trail. The trailhead will be on your left. Remember to wear a helmet and be aware of any park traffic.
Public Transport/Taxi
If you prefer not to walk or bike, you can check for local taxi services or rideshare options in Custer. Request a ride to Custer State Park. Once you arrive at the park entrance, ask the driver to drop you off at the Rankin Ridge Trailhead, which is approximately 2 miles inside the park. Make sure to confirm with the driver that they are familiar with the trailhead location.
