Exploring the Majestic Turtle Rock: A Natural Marvel

Getting There

• Walking

  From the center of Custer, head south on 5th Street towards Mount Rushmore Road (US-16). Continue walking straight for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with US-16. Turn left onto US-16 and walk for approximately 1.2 miles. You will see signs for Custer State Park. As you approach the park entrance, look for a small parking area on the left side of the road where you can leave your belongings. From there, follow the marked trail that leads into the park towards Turtle Rock. The hike to Turtle Rock is about 1 mile through scenic forested areas. Keep an eye out for trail markers to guide you along the way.

• Biking

  Start at the main square in Custer, and head south on 5th Street. Continue to the intersection with US-16. Turn left onto US-16 and bike for about 1.2 miles towards Custer State Park. There are bike lanes available for a safe ride. Once you reach the park entrance, you can secure your bike at the parking area. From there, take the designated bike trails that lead into the park. Follow the signs for Turtle Rock, which is approximately 1 mile from the parking area. The biking trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

• Hiking

  If you prefer a more direct route, you can start your hike directly from the center of Custer. Head south on 5th Street, then take a right onto the trail leading into the Custer State Park. This trail is well marked and offers a more rugged experience. The hike to Turtle Rock is about 1.5 miles from the trailhead. Be sure to wear suitable hiking shoes and bring water, as the trails can be steep in some areas. Look for signs that direct you to Turtle Rock along the way.
