Starting from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Visitor Center, exit the building and head towards the Avenue of Flags. Walk south along the Avenue of Flags until you reach the main entrance of the memorial. From there, follow the signs leading to the Presidential Trail. Continue along the trail until you reach the end, which will bring you to the viewpoint overlooking the monument. After enjoying the view, exit the area and follow the path that leads towards US-16A.

Once at US-16A, turn left and walk along the road. You will be heading towards Keystone, South Dakota. Keep an eye out for Doane Robinson Tunnel, which is approximately 1.5 miles down the road on your right side. The tunnel is located along the scenic route, providing an excellent view of Mount Rushmore in the distance. There are usually places to stop and take photos, so feel free to pause along the way.

If you prefer a more scenic route, after reaching US-16A, you can take a slight detour by walking along the hiking trails that branch off near the road. These trails will lead you to elevated viewpoints where you can enjoy stunning vistas of the surrounding Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. After enjoying the views, proceed back to US-16A and continue your walk to Doane Robinson Tunnel.
