Getting There

• Car

  From the Jewel Cave National Monument Visitor Center, head south on Highway 385 (S. Dakota Highway 385) for about 10 miles. After approximately 10 miles, take a left onto Wind Cave Road (also known as SD Highway 87). Continue on Wind Cave Road for about 4 miles until you reach the entrance to Wind Cave National Park. As you enter the park, follow the signs for the Wind Cave Canyon area, which will lead you to the parking area. Be aware that there may be a park entrance fee of $20 per vehicle, valid for 7 days.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in this rural area. However, if you are in Hot Springs, you can take a local taxi or rideshare service to Wind Cave Canyon. From Hot Springs, head southeast on SD Highway 71 for approximately 12 miles to reach the canyon area. Make sure to arrange for a return trip, as public transport does not run frequently. Costs will vary depending on the taxi or rideshare service used, so it's advisable to check rates before your trip.

• Hiking

  If you're already in the Jewel Cave area and enjoy hiking, you can take the trails from the Jewel Cave National Monument towards Wind Cave Canyon. Start at the visitor center and take the designated hiking trails that lead towards Wind Cave. The hike is roughly 5 miles and can take 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. Make sure to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate footwear. Always check trail conditions and park alerts before heading out.
