Getting There

  • Hiking

    From Mount Rushmore National Memorial, begin your hike by taking the paved walking path that leads to the main entrance. Follow the signs pointing towards the Visitor Center. After visiting the center, exit and follow the trail signs leading to the Presidential Trail. Continue on this trail until you reach SD-244. Once you reach the road, turn left and continue walking along this highway for approximately 2 miles. You will pass by several scenic viewpoints. As you approach the junction with SD-87, look for signs directing you towards the Needles Highway. This portion of the journey will take you through beautiful landscapes. After about 4 miles of walking along SD-87, you will arrive at the Needles Eye Tunnel, located at MP 31.

    Rent a bicycle from a local shop in Mount Rushmore. Start your ride from the Mount Rushmore Visitor Center and head towards SD-244. Follow SD-244 until you reach its intersection with SD-87. Turn left onto SD-87. Continue biking for about 4 miles, enjoying the scenic views along the Needles Highway. The Needles Eye Tunnel will be on your right side at MP 31. Make sure to ride carefully as the road can be narrow in some stretches.
